The first settlement on Mars may be here, in the Jezero Crater, by 2030. The next NASA Rover will land here in 2020, and if all signs are “GO”, this will be selected as the first human habitation by the USA. China-PRC will have their own Rover probe, an autonomous robot and in a league of its own, while the EU and Russia will have a joint mission to Mars in 2020.
The NASA Rover 2020 will land in the Jezero Crater, home of an ancient river delta with indications of liquid water just below the surface based on reflectance measurements along Rover paths. It is believed to be made up of iron-rich basalt. It has been designated – if all goes well with Rover 2020 – as the first human habitation on Mars.
Jezero Crater tells a story of the on-again, off-again nature of the wet past of Mars. Water filled and drained away from the crater on at least two occasions. More than 3.5 billion years ago, river channels spilled over the crater wall and created a lake. Scientists see evidence that water carried clay minerals from the surrounding area into the crater after the lake dried up. Conceivably, microbial life could have lived in Jezero during one or more of these wet times. If so, signs of their remains might be found in lakebed sediments.
November 21, 2011. On ancient Mars, water carved channels and transported sediments to form fans and deltas within lake basins. Examination of spectral data acquired from orbit show that some of these sediments have minerals that indicate chemical alteration by water. Here in Jezero Crater delta, sediments contain clays and carbonates. Is NASA’s human colony, the Mars One Concept ?
“Human Settlement on Mars
“Mars One aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. Several unmanned missions will be completed, establishing a habitable settlement before carefully selected and trained crews will depart to Mars. Funding and implementing this plan will not be easy, it will be hard. The Mars One team, with its advisers and with established aerospace companies, will evaluate and mitigate risks and identify and overcome difficulties step by step. Mars One is a global initiative whose goal is to make this everyone’s mission to Mars, including yours. If we all work together, we can do this. We’re going to Mars. Come along!”
Is NASA’s human colony, the Elon Musk and SpaceX Concept ?
“The Interplanetary Transport System will launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. An uncrewed test mission could launch as early as 2018.”
The entire system stands 400 feet (122 meters) tall.
