Why question LIGO Research?
The first publication was received on 21JAN16 and published – ‘after an incredible and very intense peer-review and thorough critique a week or two later’ – on 11FEB16.
A hundred-plus authors; Billions of dollars of Tax Dollars spent? Who could question this, in a an election year. In a crucial Presidential Election Year? 2016?
Let us step back to 1973 – The publication of GRAVITATION and the basis of our understanding of Spacetime, our Universe.
It was the penumbral awakening of “The Dancing Wu Li Masters.”
Their greatest hits. It doesn’t matter if ‘Wu Li’ to modern Chinese youth does not mean ‘Physics’. Really. It doesn’t. This book was on a flight of its own. And because of its internal language and signatures, spoke to a generation of youth, and was able to transcend past descriptions and equations.
Then, Grace Slick. I saw Grace for the first and last time perform with Jefferson Starship/Airplane at Alice’s Revisited off Lincoln Avenue. I was able to stand next to the stage. She looked down at me singing this song. I looked up her tie-dye blouse. What can I say. I was in college. Now I realize she was talking to all scientists. All of us. And to me. About feeding my head more science and keeping it open to learning. Not drugs. Like two levels of learning. I did understand science. I never took drugs and did not understand the attraction in 1970. Here is ‘White Rabbit,’ from Woodstock,
(Much like pixellated art helped Sir Fraser Stoddart finally understand how to describe his 2D molecules and molecular machines in winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016. Another convert to S.T.E.A.M. from S.T.E.M.)
Tens of thousands of middle and working class kids were in University – the first of their kind. No holds barred in a way that present-day America can barely fathom and only try to mimic with chaotic administrations and false wealth. It was the height of the Republic, so to speak. From out of the fires and grass, demonstrations, and tear-gas came this! This! This dedication, because who else was there to thank for their insight? But those same blistered hands, and the tired faces, of the bereaving parents who believed in Jack and Jackie and had scrimped and saved, to the youth who expected nothing and paid their way through college…
Dedication in GRAVITATION – a dedication to the The American Public (1973)
Sorry. That is exactly how I learned Chemistry. And thought it interesting. Led straight to my A+ in Anayltical Chemistry at Roosevelt High School. Go RoughRiders! No secret how to teach your children well in Chemistry. Let them, blow stuff up!
Blame my parent (RIP folks.) Along with my friends.
Now to 2018. The ‘Cold War’ over. No more Tete-a-tete with Russia and The United States and its allies. Peace in the Middle East on Good Friday and throughout the Easter Weekend…or not?
A new dedication to The American Public (2018) reduced to…
“We are required by law to hold these (LIGO) Workshops, as open forums to the public and contractors.” (2018)
You can almost feel the spitting contempt for Ms. J.Q. Public as they mouth the words “no one will know”…
Thus endith the Artistic Prelude… (30)
