After the Space Council was reorganized under the appropriate authority of the Vice President’s Office, business leaders, aeronautics engineers, scientists, and academics of all hues wondered aloud if the US was again serious about taking the lead and moving forward in Space and Spacetime exploration.
“Can we do this without a space race?”, is an open question still. “Will this anger Russia? China? Europe? Voters?” Questions that sounded like Captain Kirk was asking them in one-word-sentences.
That is the beauty and the humanity of the undiscovered country: No. One. Knows. All we can rely on our is ability to do science and industry. Unknowns come from nowhere it seems. The rich and famous loose part of their fortunes and stature. Imagine a country or a world in which “Free Trade” existed – the dream of many a broken middle class American today. “Liberty – Parent of Science and Industry” was the first motto of The USA.
One thing is for sure. We can not survive as humanity – as a species – without this type challenge. And only a people who fought and died for this liberty and accustom to being free; acting independently or as a team in the worst conditions, could lead.
We need leaders in Space and Spacetime Exploration who not only are a Tiger in their masses and numbers, but when events call for it, can be a Tiger by themselves alone. The only nations who have proven that they can supply such leaders are democratic and free-thinking. They understand we need not only the finest, we need everybody who has something to add. Even the lowest of the low. There own history forced them, kicking and screaming, to that conclusion. Let’s reflect on that history – briefly – to move forward again.
